Three days between the Colosseum, Trastevere and the Roman hills, in a small car that fits anywhere.
We landed at Fiumicino on a Friday evening and within ten minutes we were on the road in an orange Fiat 500 from the Yuppi-Rent desk. No card deposit, no queue, felt right at home.
Saturday we headed downtown. The tiny car made parking near Villa Borghese easy, and from there we walked to the Trevi fountain while the tourist coaches sat in traffic.
In the afternoon we drove up to the Castelli Romani. Frascati, Genzano, Lake Nemi: gentle roads, sudden views, and the 500 flowing like a marble. Unlimited mileage included — I never once checked the odometer.
Sunday, an easy return: coffee in a random square, then off to the airport. Two-minute drop-off, no excuses about imaginary scratches. We'll be back.
